The VIN of PORSCHE cars has two main "versions" - for the European and American markets. For the European market, positions 4-6 are filled with the letters ZZZ. For cars for the American market, these positions contain encrypted data on the model line, engine type and installed passive safety systems.

Not all manufacturers comply with this - explicitly, the year of issue in the VIN on the European market is not indicated on HONDA, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, MAZDA, Toyota, NISSAN cars.
