Elon Musk promises full autopilot in Tesla by the end of the year
Elon Musk has promised that in “a month or two” Tesla cars will receive an improved autopilot that will not require supervision by the driver. However, experts consider this statement questionable for several reasons.
Tesla cars currently have Full Self-Driving (Supervised) autopilot, which can only be used under the supervision of the driver. According to Musk's new statement, Tesla owners will soon be able to text while driving. In other words, autopilot will no longer require constant supervision.
Skeptics note that the Tesla CEO has been promising a full-fledged autopilot system every year for six years now and has set himself a new deadline to appease shareholders. However, US laws may be an obstacle to the implementation of this idea. They prohibit texting while driving under penalty of a fine.
It can be assumed that Tesla will simply disable the function that monitors whether the driver is using their phone, but this does not eliminate the risk of receiving a fine. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz already has a legal autopilot system that allows drivers to text while driving, but only on certain highways in California and Nevada.
