The MG4 Anxin Edition became the first production car with a semi-solid battery.
MG Motors has unveiled the world's first electric car with a semi-solid battery. A special version of the MG4 crossover, called the Anxin Edition, will be equipped with a manganese-lithium battery from Suzhou QingTao Power Technology.
Unlike conventional lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, the new technology promises improved performance in cold weather and some of the advantages of fully solid-state batteries. Although their energy capacity is comparable to conventional lithium-ion models, the semi-solid-state design provides faster charging, increased thermal safety, and better performance in low temperatures. In addition, such batteries potentially last longer and withstand a greater number of full charge and discharge cycles.
According to registration documents, a special version of the MG4 will debut in September 2025. The car's design will be similar to that of the standard model.
The MG4 is currently priced between $10,272 and $14,727. The Anxin Edition will likely be more expensive due to the new battery, but will offer increased capacity and range. MG will thus become the first manufacturer to bring a semi-solid-state battery to series production.
