Kia is abandoning its flagship K9 in favor of mass production of electric cars.
Kia has decided to discontinue its flagship K9 sedan, known as the K900 in some regions, after 14 years of production. According to South Korean media, production of the model will end by the end of 2026, and no direct successor is planned.
The reason lies in declining sales and a shift in the company's strategy. Kia intends to focus resources on developing more affordable and mass-market electric vehicles. The brand is already expanding its lineup, which includes the EV2, EV3, EV4, and EV5. By 2030, the company plans to sell 14 electric models.
In addition to electric passenger cars, the company is focusing on electric commercial vehicles (PBV) and software-defined vehicles (SDV). The first such models are expected to be released in 2027.
In essence, Kia is finally abandoning the fight in the large executive sedan segment and is betting on those models that have the potential to generate higher demand in the era of mass electrification.
