Self-balancing electric bike C-1 is ready for mass production

Lit Motors has announced the imminent start of production of an unusual electric motorcycle C-1, which uses gyroscopes for self-balancing. The prototype, presented back in 2021, could keep its balance at a speed of 16 km/h.

The C-1 was originally planned to be released back in 2014. The following specifications were announced: speed up to 201 km/h, a range of 322 km and a price of $16,000. But debugging the gyroscope system took longer than expected. The company is now finalizing the fundraising through WeFunder and preparing a new beta prototype, which should be available within a year.

The first test drives for sponsors will begin in 2 years, with mass production starting in 2029. By 2034, the company hopes to produce up to 300,000 units annually. Lit Motors CEO Daniel Kim notes that for now they intend to focus on reducing the weight of the electric bike and improving the performance of the gyroscopes.

The C-1 remains the only fully enclosed self-balancing electric motorcycle. Its gyroscopes not only prevent falls, but also allow it to carry a passenger. If Lit Motors pulls it off, the C-1 could become the first mass-market vehicle to combine the safety of a car with the maneuverability of a motorcycle.
