BMW Unveils Color-Changing Car Technology
BMW has unveiled the iX3 Flow Edition—a production version of the car with a color-changing body. The technology is based on E Ink’s electronic paper panels, which allow the car to change its appearance using pre-programmed animations.
The main feature of the design is that it transforms the body into a kind of “living” canvas. The driver has eight design options to choose from. At the same time, the technology consumes almost no energy, as electricity is only required when the image changes.
Unlike earlier concepts, this design is already ready for mass production. The technology has been integrated directly into the body structure and tested for resistance to temperature, UV radiation, and mechanical stress.
Some believe that this technology could present drivers with a number of challenges. Specifically, this concerns registering the vehicle in a specific color scheme. Therefore, there are currently no details regarding the implementation of this technology in commercial models.
