Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

The VIN of AUDI cars has two options - for the European and American markets. The VIN for the European market does not have full compliance with the standard and positions 4-6 are filled with the letters ZZZ. For cars for the American market, these positions contain encrypted data on the model line, engine type and installed passive safety systems.

According to the requirements of the standard in the VIN, the year of manufacture is indicated by the 10th character. Not all manufacturers comply with this - explicitly, the year of issue in the VIN on the European market is not indicated on HONDA, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, MAZDA, Toyota, NISSAN cars. But models released for the North American market necessarily contain the model year in the 10th VIN character.
